What is a safety check?
Safety checks are basic mechanical checks, targeting certain vehicle components that may cause a risk to vehicle occupants and other road users if they are not operating correctly or are excessively worn.
After your vehicle has passed the safety check, the station sends a report to the RMS electronically.
Examiners will check the following vehicle components during a safety check:
- Vehicle identification (AUVIS only)
- Brakes
- Steering and suspension
- Wheels and tyres
- Body condition
- Seats and seat belts
- Lights and headlight aim
- Engine/driveline
- Exhaust system
- Towing attachment
- LPG system (accredited examiners only)
- Number plates (obscured, faded, unauthorised)
- No dangerous protrusions fitted (brackets for the spotlight, fishing rod holders etc)
Who performs a safety check?
Only stations authorised by the RMS are able to perform a safety check.
Which vehicles need to be checked and when?
Your registration renewal notice will tell you if your vehicle is due for a safety check.
If you want to renew your registration and your vehicle is more than 5 years old, you will need a safety check.
If you want to register a light vehicle that is not currently registered in NSW, you will need an AUVIS inspection.
We Provide a Blue Slip Inspection Service
An unregistered vehicle safety inspection report (Blue Slip) proves your vehicle is roadworthy and ensures your vehicle meets the design and identity standards set by the RMS. Zax ALL Kars can provide you with the same day service for Blue Slip Inspections.
Blue Slips are required for vehicles which have been unregistered for more than 3 months, have been brought into NSW from another State or Country, have no number plates or have been written off and approved for re-registration.
Other reasons a Blue Slip may be required include; clearing defect notices or adjustment of registration records where something on the vehicle has significantly changed.
